What is a systematic withdrawal plan (SWP)?
A systematic withdrawal plan is an option offered by mutual fund houses which allows you to redeem a certain amount of money from a mutual fund scheme at regular intervals (monthly, quarterly, annually).
The way it works is:
1. You buy a lump-sum corpus of a mutual fund scheme (could be equity or debt)
2. You set a certain amount of cash you wish to withdraw and a date (say, ₹40,000 on the 1st of every month).
3. On that particular day, the mutual fund house will redeem the number of units of mutual fund required to generate that particular amount of cash at the prevailing Net Asset Value (NAV).
4. This cash is transferred directly into your bank account while the rest of the units continue to remain invested.
Understanding the factors affecting corpus growth (or decay)
An SWP typically makes the portfolio return and withdrawal rates the two most important factors in determining whether a corpus will grow or reduce over time.
Growth in capital (withdrawal rate < return rate): If your portfolio has grown by 10% and you withdraw 6% of the corpus, you have more money on hand while your portfolio continues to grow. You are seeing a benefit of compounding while also earning regular income.
Preservation of capital (withdrawal rate \approx return rate): If you are withdrawing an amount equivalent to the rate of growth of the portfolio, then the corpus will not change significantly over several decades.
Reduction in capital (withdrawal rate > return rate): By withdrawing 12% of the corpus every year from a fund growing at 8%, you would be reducing the corpus to zero eventually, as you are liquidating more of the portfolio than gets reinvested to the portfolio.

Conservative Hybrid or Equity Savings Funds: Maintain 3 to 5 years of expected withdrawal needs in lower-volatility funds (such as Arbitrage Funds, Multi-Asset Allocation, or Equity Savings Schemes) to insulate monthly redemptions from bear market shocks.
